A playroom should be a space for young children to explore, play, exercise their imagination, and make messes—without parents worrying about hidden dangers. Although it’s impossible to prevent every spill or fall, there are plenty of ways to make a playroom safer.

Here are 5 ways to make your playroom safer:

1. ANCHOR FURNITURE TO THE WALL.
Bookshelves, dressers, and even tall toy storage organizers can tip over if a child tries to climb them. Use furniture anchors or wall straps to prevent accidents from happening and reduce the likelihood of wobbly furniture. Not only does this keep the playroom safer, but it also makes tidying up easier.

2. CHOOSE SOFT FLOORING
Hard floors might be easy to clean, but they’re not the best when it comes to a playroom. Add plush area rugs or foam play mats to cushion little knees and heads.. Make sure any rugs you choose have non-slip backings or use rug grippers to prevent tripping.

3. ENSURE YOUR WINDOW COVERINGS ARE CORDLESS
Window cords pose a serious strangulation risk to young children. To help keep your playroom safe, take a look at your window coverings and if they are corded, replace them with today’s safer, cordless products. If replacing them isn’t an option, be sure to move all furniture away from windows and keep any cords fully out of reach.

4. KEEP SMALL OBJECTS OUT OF REACH
Toddlers naturally love to explore with their hands and mouths, making it very important to keep small objects out of reach. Ensure tiny toys, batteries, and other small items are safely out of reach. Regularly check the floor and play surfaces for any stray pieces.

5. INSTALL CHILDPROOF OUTLETS
Electrical outlets and electrical cords can be tempting for curious hands. Use outlet covers or tamper-resistant outlets to keep little fingers safe. For lamps, nightlights or any plugged-in electronics, tuck cords behind furniture or use cord covers to avoid tripping and pulling hazards. Keeping wires organized also helps reduce clutter, making the playroom look neat and organized!

By making a few changes, you can create a playroom that’s fun, functional, and most importantly, safe.
