Babyproofing often starts with outlets, cabinet doors, stairs and sharp corners. But one potential hazard can blend into the background… cords on blinds, shades and other window coverings.

A 2026 national survey found that 84% of households with children recognize that pull cords can pose a strangulation hazard, yet only 27% have replaced corded blinds with cordless alternatives.

Use Baby Safety Month this September to turn awareness into action.

1. Look at every window from a child’s point of view
Check bedrooms, playrooms, family rooms and homes where children visit for exposed, dangling or looped cords.

2. Create distance from the window
Move cribs, beds, changing tables, chairs, toy chests and other furniture away from windows – preferably to another wall.

3. Choose cordless when replacing window coverings
The safest option around young children is cordless. When shopping, look for the Best for Kids™ certification label.

4. Do not treat temporary adjustments as permanent fixes
Securing or shortening a cord may reduce access, but it does not eliminate the hazard. Make replacement the goal.

5. Repeat the check beyond your home
Share the checklist with grandparents, babysitters and other caregivers.  Also be aware when staying in hotels and other places outside the home.

This Baby Safety Month, take five minutes to check every window covering and make cordless part of your family’s safety plan.
