Summer is here – a season of vacationing, adventure, and exploration for children. With the excitement of warm weather, long sunny days, and outdoor activities, we must not forget to keep on top of potential summer dangers. Read about some of the most common summer hazards and tips on how to help keep your kids safe.
WATER SAFETY
Swimming pools, beaches and lakes are a must-do activity in the summer, but they can pose serious risks for young ones. Be sure to supervise children closely when they are near water and never leave them unattended when they’re in the water. When there are many adults around, there is the assumption that the child is being watched and accidents can happen. Also, wearing certain colors can pose a risk by unintentionally blending in with your surroundings.
BEACH SAFETY
Beaches offer endless hours of fun, but they come with their own set of hazards. Sunscreen is an obvious one – and make sure to reapply after a few hours. There are other dangers in plain site… Always supervise kids closely at the beach and discourage them from digging deep holes in the sand. “Sand drowning” is a rare but dangerous occurrence where children can become trapped under collapsing sand tunnels or holes. Most importantly, teach them to recognize and stay away from strong currents, and to swim only in designated areas supervised by lifeguards.
VACATION RENTAL SAFETY
Having a home away from home can present hidden dangers for young children. One of the most significant risks is corded window coverings which can pose a strangulation hazard. It’s important to opt for rentals that offer cordless window coverings. Check that balconies have secure railings and that there are no accessible hazards like cleaning supplies. Conduct a quick safety check upon arrival to identify and address any potential risks.
Regardless of the activity, keeping kids hydrated and cool is essential during the hot summer months. If not near a body of water, carry water bottles or have regular water breaks. By taking these precautions and keeping a vigilant eye on children, you can help ensure the family has a safe and enjoyable summer!
